From Bronner Bros. to Black Hair Reimagined, trade shows are no longer a thing of beauty’s fantastical past. Now, there’s a new show in town joining in on the fun. Black Beauty Roster, an inclusive platform for industry professionals, just hosted their first-ever beauty show in New York: the BBR Beauty Show.

For founder Maude Okrah Hunter, “it feels incredibly rewarding,” she tells ESSENCE. “The response has exceeded every expectation and confirmed what we’ve believed all along, that our industry is hungry for elevated education, meaningful community, and spaces that truly celebrate inclusive beauty with industry leading brands.”

Presented by SalonCentric, a prominent figure in beauty trade shows, BBR Beauty Show featured a notable line-up of beauty authorities including Danessa Myricks, Sabrina Elba, and Jessica Harris-Dupart. Instead of exclusively a presentation of hair fashion, the show was full of masterclasses, live demos, and brand activations to show attendees how to execute the dramatic looks.

Lupita Nyong’o’s hairstylist Vernon François, for one, collaborated with Ulta on three textured hairstyles including his sculptural afro. Supermodel Anok Yai had a panel discussion with celebrity makeup artist Aston Em. Meanwhile, lines were wrapped around booths to snag products from industry-favorite brands like Pattern, Fenty Beauty, and Oribe.

“What excited me most was seeing the impact happen in real time,” Hunter says. “Watching Black-owned beauty brands sell out, while creatives packed our masterclasses learning and dancing.” Her vision for Black Beauty Roster is to be a world-class destination for beauty professionals and brands to commune under one roof. And, her first-ever beauty show gave breath to her imagined world.

“The energy was amazing,” she says. “It was everything we hoped the day would be.”
