From Television Visibility to Musical Identity

When I sat down with Drea Dominique, I knew we were getting more than just another artist interview. What I didn’t expect was how quickly the conversation would turn into something real, the kind of exchange where the guest answers your unasked questions before you even get to them. That’s Drea. She’s present, she’s honest, and she’s done being boxed in.

Many fans first met Drea on Bad Girls Club season 9, but that chapter is long behind her. Today, she’s an artist, entrepreneur, and mother building a multifaceted brand through her family-owned indie label, Blessed Beyond Entertainment. Her latest single “Lue Viton” is a Latin-infused R&B party track that’s already gaining momentum, and her upcoming album, Romantic Tragedies, drops July 4th, preceded by a live performance at FIFA Fest in Miami on July 1st and an album release party on July 3rd at ONZYTE Studios in Miami.

The Real Drea vs. The Reality TV Caricature

One of the first things I wanted to understand was how Drea sees herself now versus who the cameras made her out to be. Her answer was immediate and unfiltered.

“Amazing, misunderstood, very, very loving, silly, funny, musical.”

She explained that reality TV paints a narrative: Drama, fighting, pettiness, none of which defines her. Music is where she’s asking people to meet the real person.

“I think it’s nice to be able to deliver through the music, you getting to see the real person in me. My music is emotional and talks about feelings, and love, and being sad. Getting down to the core of the person that I actually am.”

Romantic Tragedies: Love, Loss, and Therapy on a Track

The album title immediately caught my attention. Drea described it as her “tragic romantic” story, but she’s quick to note that even tragedies can be beautiful. The project covers the full spectrum of love, the thrill of pursuit, heartbreak, and grief. She shared with me that the last person she was with passed away, and processing that loss is woven into the album’s fabric.

“It is part of getting your mental health together, I think. It’s very healthy for you to put your thoughts down, and a great outlet is to do it musically. As opposed to crying out all the time, let me go put it on a song.”

She also teased a track from the project called “Do Me Badly,” a song about giving someone chance after chance only to be let down again. “Instead of going crazy, put it on a song. It’s therapy.

    Motherhood, Advocacy, and Chasing Dreams

What struck me most was Drea’s openness about being a mom to a daughter on the autism spectrum. She didn’t wait for me to ask; she brought it up naturally, weaving it into the larger conversation about what connects all the pieces of her brand.

“I’m a mom of my daughter, [who is] on the spectrum, so my daughter is special needs. There’s a lot of women that struggle with that, having a special needs child, not really having a support system or people that can relate.”

Her message to those women is clear: You don’t have to be just one thing. You can be an advocate, an entrepreneur, and an artist all at once.

“I don’t need to just be a mom that is advocating for her child that has special needs. I’m still out here chasing my dreams. I’m building a brand. I’m doing the lash line, the lip line. I’m doing the t-shirts, the merch. I’m still taking the time to get in the studio.”

    Advice for Women Building Independently

When I asked what she wishes another woman had told her earlier in her journey, her answer was direct.

“Just keep going. It’s hard, and it can get discouraging. A lot are going to tell you no. They’re going to tell you, ‘You’re just from Bad Girls Club. What do you think you’re trying to do over here?’ Or you’re a mom, you just need to go be a mom. Do you and keep going. Not everybody’s going to like your stuff. Your tribe will find you.”

She emphasized dedication, patience, and staying true to yourself, even when the industry tells you to be someone else.
