South Africa has the most future-ready economy on the continent, according to a new report. A study by a digital entertainment platform BC GameBC Game examined nine pillars that determine a country’s readiness for the future.

    About the study

Digital infrastructure measured the number of people online in each country, while innovation tracked the strength of the startup industry.

Economic momentum merged income levels and growth, while governance focused on institutional quality. Human capital examined workforce capabilities and age profiles, while energy access measured electricity coverage. Education analysed the number of people attending university and government spending, while economic diversification measured export sophistication. Additionally, AI readiness assessed preparedness for emerging technologies.

    What did the study find?

South Africa has the strongest startup ecosystem and Internet penetration above 78%. More than three-quarters of South Africans are online, and the country has Africa’s strongest startup ecosystem, with a score of 5.16/10, far ahead of other countries on the continent. Its supportive policies and growing digital skills put the country in a good position to adopt artificial intelligence.

Mauritius comes in second, with a per-person income of nearly $12K, the highest among the top ten. Nearly half of its young people are enrolled in tertiary education, creating a steady flow of qualified graduates, while internet use stands at a solid 73%.

Egypt ranks third among the top five most AI-ready nations, driven by forward‐looking policies and a workforce with improving technical abilities.

“When people think of Africa’s economy, they still picture mineral exports and safari lodges. The data suggests something different is happening. South Africa’s startup ecosystem now rivals parts of Europe,” an analyst from JB.com said about the study.

“Kenya has become a testbed for AI-driven services built around mobile money rails that the West never built. The continent is building a digital economy designed for places where the grid is unreliable, addresses are informal, and the median age is 19. That is a blueprint the rest of the world could learn from.”
