Gary residents paid more for grid upgrades, then got left in the dark for nearly two weeks while a majority-Black city waited on power, answers, and meaningful help. For free and unbiased Medicare help, dial (724) 264-8281 to speak with my trusted partner, Chapter, or go to https://askchapter.org/roland Paid Partnership Nearly two weeks after a massive storm tore through Gary, Indiana, thousands of residents were still waiting for full power restoration. Capital B reporter Calvin Davis says Gary took the worst of the outage in Lake County. He says 100% of Gary customers initially lost power and more than half were still without electricity a week later, even as surrounding communities came back online. NIPSCO customers had already been paying nearly 17% higher residential rates after the utility sought increases tied to grid strengthening and system hardening. Davis says a class-action lawsuit alleges that work tied to system hardening, grid strengthening, and vegetation management may not have been completed as promised. Now residents want to know where that money went. NIPSCO and parent company NiSource also face questions over restoration delays, vegetation management, underground power lines, continued billing during the outage, and whether profit margins were prioritized over customer safety. Gary residents have been leaning on churches, community organizations, and one another while waiting for federal disaster assistance. #RolandMartinUnfiltered #BlackStarNetwork #GaryIndiana #NIPSCO #PowerOutage #BlackCommunities #Infrastructure Black Star Network Partner: Chapter Chapter and its affiliates are not connected with or endorsed by any government entity or the federal Medicare program.
