At least part of $TARFACE came from an AI music generator. Tyga has confirmed that Suno was used during production of his ’80s-inspired album, ending weeks of speculation over whether the project’s polished synth-pop sound was entirely created through conventional studio work. The rapper discussed the process during an interview with VIBE, where he said the technology helped create specific musical elements, including retro synthesizers and a guitar solo. He maintained that he wrote the material and recorded the vocals himself.

“We definitely used AI as a tool,” Tyga said. “And I know people are going to be mad about me saying this, but it’s where technology is going.”

Rather than apologize for the decision, he compared the resistance surrounding generative music programs to the skepticism that greeted Auto-Tune during the 2000s. In Tyga’s view, the technology does not replace the artist when it is being used to execute an existing idea. “As far as the writing, all the vocals are all me,” he added. “There’s nothing wrong with using technology as a tool.”

Controversy Over AI In Hip Hop

That distinction will not satisfy everyone. Auto-Tune alters a performance supplied by a human vocalist, while Suno can generate complete instrumental passages from a prompt. Tyga’s admission confirms that some of the sounds heard on $TARFACE were produced by the program, even if the album was not written or fully generated by it.

Questions about the project intensified as Tyga introduced an alter ego built around ’80s pop and synth-wave. Producer Medasin publicly alleged that music connected to the rollout contained signs of generative AI, placing Tyga alongside Fenix Flexin in a wider debate. Fenix has continued denying that AI was used on his viral single.

Moreover, this new information was absent from Tyga’s early promotion. While introducing $TARFACE, Tyga emphasized to PEOPLE the use of vintage equipment, including old harmonizers and other hardware associated with ’80s recording techniques. He said the goal was to create music that felt native to 1983 rather than place a nostalgic filter over modern Rap production.

Now, that studio process includes both analog equipment and generative software. Tyga has not identified every song featuring AI-assisted production or specified how much of the finished album came from Suno.
