    Dr. Ayanna Howard has joined the Spelman College Board of Trustees as its 12th president, the historically Black liberal arts school for women. Howard will become the university’s roboticist and artificial intelligence expert.

    “I am deeply honoured and excited to join Spelman College, and the amazing faculty, staff, and trustees that have shaped generations of Black women,” said Dr. Howard in a press release.

    “Students choose Spelman because they want to make a difference in the world, and as the world changes, we must equip them to thrive. At a time when technology, the workforce, and society are evolving rapidly, Spelman’s mission has never been more important. I look forward to building on the College’s legacy while honoring its tradition, values, and sisterhood.”

    The university continues to advance academic excellence by providing Black women with the tools they need to succeed in the workplace. Dr Howard’s presidency will enable Spelman to become a leading university, bringing her top-tier robotics and AI expertise.

    “As we continue to invest in Spelman’s future through initiatives like Spelman Forward, I am confident Dr Howard will build upon this strong foundation and help lead Spelman to even greater heights,” Rosalind “Roz” Brewer, C’84, Spelman College, Interim President and Chair Emerita, said.

    About Dr. Ayanna Howard

    Inspired by sci-fi stories, Howard, 52, has had an illustrious career in robotics, including a 12-year stint at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.  She founded Zyrobotics, a nonprofit developing mobile therapy products for children with special needs. 

    She serves on the boards of Brown University, Autodesk and Motorola Solutions and has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Academy of Inventors.

    Howard made history as the first woman to lead Ohio State’s College of Engineering, continuing to pave the way for future generations in STEM.
