Tennessee State’s historic push into Division I men’s hockey has hit another major pause—and at this point, it’s fair to ask when, or if, the program will finally take the ice.

After already shelving its highly anticipated 2025–26 debut, Tennessee State has now also canceled its 2026–27 season, according to The Tennessean.

The news comes weeks after TSU interim President Dwayne Tucker told The Athletic in June that the university is evaluating whether it can move forward with the men’s hockey program, which was announced in June 2023 in partnership with the NHL’s Nashville Predators.

“I can tell you we’re not going to move forward with a hockey program if the sustainable funding is not there,” Tucker told the website. “Unfortunately, there’s no funds through 2030 that we can provide to a start-up program.”

Tennessee State tried to make HBCU hockey history

Back in 2023, Tennessee State made national headlines by announcing it would become the first historically Black public university to sponsor men’s ice hockey. The reveal, held at Bridgestone Arena ahead of the NHL Draft, was backed heavily by the Nashville Predators and the NHL—both of whom played key roles in bringing the vision to life.

Tennessee State hired Duante’ Abercrombie as head coach. The program then received its first-ever commit, Xavier Abel, in 2024.

That support, at least publicly, hasn’t gone away. A Predators representative confirmed that the organization remains committed to the initiative.

The first delay—the cancellation of the 2025–26 season—came amid well-documented financial challenges at the university, including a high-profile funding dispute with the state. Whether those same financial pressures are behind this latest setback remains unclear.

What is clear is this: a program once positioned as a historic breakthrough for diversity in hockey is now facing prolonged uncertainty.

And with each passing season that never materializes, the question shifts from “when will TSU hockey begin?” to something far more complicated.
