PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — As the aviation industry looks for ways to reduce its environmental impact, researchers at Prairie View A&M University have received a $320,000 grant from Shell Global Solutions to help develop cleaner alternatives to traditional jet fuel.

The project is led by Dr. Raghava Kommalapati, Honeywell Endowed Professor and professor of civil and environmental engineering, and Dr. Ananda Amarasekara, Regents Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Physics. Their research will explore new ways to produce sustainable aviation fuel from biomass—renewable organic materials such as plant matter—in an effort to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The collaboration combines Shell’s industry expertise with PVAMU’s research capabilities to advance technologies for producing sustainable aviation fuel. The project is expected to contribute new scientific knowledge through peer-reviewed publications and intellectual property focused on converting biomass into fuel.

The grant will also create opportunities for student success. A graduate student will complete a master’s thesis based on the research, while a postdoctoral research associate will receive specialized training and professional development through hands-on research.

The award further expands PVAMU’s growing portfolio in sustainable energy research while providing students and researchers with opportunities to contribute to innovations that support cleaner, more resilient energy solutions.
