National Museum of Railroad History & Innovation Debuts Hands-On S.T.E.A.M. Week for Families

Museum invites families to explore the inventions, engineering and science that helped build America’s railroads

Baltimore, MD – The National Museum of Railroad History & Innovation will debut Summer S.T.E.A.M. Week, from August 17–21, offering a week of hands-on experiments, workshops and tours exploring the innovation behind America’s railroads.

Presented in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary, the week will introduce visitors to the inventors and engineers whose work in science, technology, engineering, art and math helped shape rail transportation and the nation.

“As the nation continues to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, Summer S.T.E.A.M. Week gives us an exciting opportunity to explore the people and ideas that helped railroads—and our country—move forward,” said Kris Hoellen, executive director of the National Museum of Railroad History & Innovation. “Through hands-on learning, we hope to help young visitors understand the science behind railroading and inspire them to become the next generation of thinkers, builders and innovators.”

Each day will focus on a different area of railroad history and innovation. Programs will include opportunities to build and test a locomotive, send messages using telegraph technology, design a bridge strong enough to carry a model train car and explore the electromagnetic energy behind magnetic levitation trains.

Daily workshops and tours will also highlight the inventors of these technologies such as Samuel Morse, Peter Cooper, Olive Dennis and George Washington as well as the evolution of railroad technology.
