For years, audiences have been shifting away from traditional media outlets toward independent, creator-led shows. And Podcasting has emerged as one of the fastest-growing formats, with the global industry valued at approximately $32 billion in 2025 and projected to keep climbing.

Streaming giants such as Netflix are now entering the space, bidding for the rights to host some of the most popular shows on their platform. Independent creators are no longer niche outliers, but instead commanding a combined audience of up to 456 million people worldwide

The Forbes 2026 Highest-Paid Podcasters List takes a deep dive into 20 of the industry’s biggest earners and how they built their media empires. Three Black creators made the list this year, each constructing their brands one step at a time. Here’s a closer look at where they landed and how they got there.

    1. Steven Bartlett – The Diary of a CEO

At number three on the list, Bartlett is the youngest host in the top five and the highest-earning Black podcaster in the world. Forbes estimates he earned $45 million from the podcast over the past 12 months.  Bartlett dropped the first episode of Diary of a CEO in 2017, with almost no listeners. But his passion, dedication, and vulnerability slowly started to captivate people’s attention. What started as him sharing stories from his experiences as a founder turned into long-form interviews with famous guests like Michelle Obama, Richard Branson, and Simon Cowell.

Rather than signing with a major network, Bartlett has retained ownership of his independent operation. He has turned down deals rumored to exceed $100 million because the founder asserts that he’s “not met a single podcast network, company, media conglomerate in the world that can help you grow your podcast using the modern platforms in the way that we can,” he said to Forbes

His confidence in his platform has paid off. His holding company, Steven.com, reached a $425 million valuation following an eight-figure investment round led by Slow Ventures and Apeiron Investment Group last fall. In 2021, Bartlett also made history as the youngest-ever investor to join the BBC’s Dragon’s Den.

    2. Charlamagne Tha God – The Breakfast Club

Charlamagne Tha God comes in on the Forbes list at number 10 for his role as the host of The Breakfast Club. The morning radio show launched in 2010 on New York City’s Power 105.1, and is co-hosted by DJ Envy. The program syndicates to over 90 U.S. radio markets, commands billions of digital downloads via YouTube, and is streamed daily on Netflix. Charlamagne secured the number 10 spot on the Forbes list, with estimated earnings of $27 million.

This financial dominance is created through a hybrid model that spans radio, podcasting, network equity, and a streaming licensing fee. Last year, Charlamagne signed a massive $200 million five-year extension with iHeartMedia. Even more, in June this year, Charlamagne landed a deal with Netflix where the show ventured into video podcast format. It is reportedly the platform’s most-viewed podcast so far this year.

Beyond The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne is also the founder of the Black Effect Podcast Network in collaboration with iHeartMedia. Under that umbrella, he is on a mission to amplify Black voices and foster equitable, long-term partnerships for creators. By maintaining a 51% majority stake in the network, Charlamagne has shifted from on-air talent to media owner. He is set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2027.

    3. Joe Budden – The Joe Budden Podcast

Former rapper turned podcast host Joe Budden has built the most fan-funded business model on the list. The Joe Budden Podcast is the biggest podcast on Patreon, with more than 70,000 paid subscribers. Founded in 2015, the show has become a leading independent hip-hop and culture show. Budden clocks in at number 15 on the Forbes list, with estimated earnings of $20 million.

Alongside business partner Ian Schwartzman, he’s built a fully independent network: The Joe Budden Network. The network is adding two new shows launching this August. An executive interview series hosted by Schwartzman for Yahoo Finance, and a true crime podcast from Budden made in partnership with Law and Order creator Dick Wolf. He is now also developing a technology platform with community-building tools he hopes to license to other creators.

Rather than traditional licensing or network deals, Budden’s revenue is made directly from fans. His Patreon subscriptions are the backbone of his media business, which is also supplemented by advertising. He is the clearest example of a creator who is monetizing loyalty itself rather than reach.
