The 12-track project includes the ethereal “[Teleport],” which received a glowing review from music journalist Jeremy Hecht, who described the record as “his favorite song in the entire world right now,” adding that he “can’t stop listening to it” and has “no doubt that Marcus is going to be an absolute star.”

[Spirit] is one of Marcus Charles’ most ambitious offerings to date. The new album arrives amid a career milestone for the retrofuturist, who produces, writes, directs, and edits his own work. It marks his seventh project since 2016, with each release expanding the scope of the one before it. This time, Charles documents what he describes as the “Hero’s Journey” (the stretch of life where you begin to understand who you are and who you have the potential to become). The result is an expansive body of work, one that merges an array of influences through layered synths with hip-hop  sensibilities.

With [Spirit]Marcus Charles arrives as a singular voice with the vision and presence to leave a lasting mark. Stream the new album and stay tuned for more.

     ABOUT MARCUS CHARLES

Over the past decade, Marcus Charles has been building a creative universe that merges hip-hop and science fiction into something that resists easy comparison. Born in upstate New York, now based in Los Angeles, Charles is a multi-instrumentalist with over twelve years of piano training who produces, writes, directs, and edits his own work. He’s released six independent projects since 2016, including the conceptual LP Humans, Robots & Ghosts, a record built around three interlocking ideas: self-discovery, the absence of choice, and cosmic teaching. Each project has expanded the scope of the one before it. His forthcoming album [Spirit] takes that progression to its logical end. It is a 12-song concept record structured on the Hero’s Journey, where each track maps to a stage of transformation, from ordinary world to return of the elixir. “I’ve always looked at my exploration as a musician and my growth as a person as parallel paths,” Charles has said. [Spirit] is where those paths finally converge. The sound is retrofuturist: layered synths and textured production underneath songwriting that swings from deeply internal to wide open and cinematic. His visual identity is just as considered. He works within a design system he created called Sky Pixels, blue digital artifacts cropped from sky imagery that appear across his artwork, videos, and performances as markers of spiritual presence. Onstage, he performs with a keytar wielded less like an instrument and more like an extension of the world he’s constructing. “I’m most excited about realizing this world,” he said. “Establishing this grand audiovisual idea.” Everything Charles makes is in service of that single ambition: collapsing imagination into reality.
