Dr. Umar Johnson joins Loon on It’s Up There Podcast and takes the Karmelo Anthony case far beyond the usual social media framing. In this clip, he argues that Karmelo Anthony should never have been looking at a murder charge in the first place, says the case was racially shaped from the indictment stage forward, and compares Karmelo’s 35-year sentence to other recent cases that ended with far lighter or more favorable outcomes. The conversation gets especially strong when Loon presses him with the race-reversal question and Dr. Umar answers directly that yes, he would acquit a white boy too if the facts really showed self-defense. That answer makes the whole clip bigger than outrage — it turns it into a debate about whether the justice system applies one standard consistently. The outside case context is real. AP reported that a Collin County jury convicted Karmelo Anthony of murder and sentenced him to 35 years for fatally stabbing Austin Metcalf, rejecting Anthony’s self-defense claim. In Bell County, Texas, local reporting shows Caysen Allison was convicted on a lesser charge and sentenced to 10 years in the fatal stabbing of Joe Ramirez. In South Carolina, Rick Chow was acquitted in the shooting death of Cyrus Carmack-Belton. Those public outcomes are why Dr. Umar’s comparison argument hits so hard, even though some of his conflict-of-interest claims in the clip remain allegations that I have not independently verified. Was Karmelo Anthony overcharged from the start, or are these comparison cases not really comparable?
