Chelsea have reached a verbal agreement with Serie A side Como for the transfer of defender Trevoh Chalobah in a deal worth a reported £26 million.

According to SunSport, the England defender is now closing in on a permanent move to Italy after both clubs agreed the terms of the transfer, with only the final formalities remaining before the switch is completed.

Chalobah had already agreed personal terms on a long-term contract with Como several weeks ago, paving the way for the transfer after club-to-club negotiations were concluded.

Chalobah set for new challenge in Italy

The 26-year-old is expected to end his long association with Chelsea, the club where he progressed through the academy before establishing himself in the senior team.

After loan spells at Ipswich Town, Huddersfield Town and Lorient, Chalobah went on to make more than 100 appearances for the Blues, becoming a reliable defensive option across several seasons.

The move to Como is understood to have appealed to the defender because of the opportunity to play regular first-team football and compete in the UEFA Champions League under head coach Cesc Fàbregas.

Chelsea are currently on their pre-season tour, while Chalobah prepares to complete the final stages of his transfer.

    Chelsea continue squad overhaul

Chalobah’s departure forms part of Chelsea’s efforts to streamline their squad after another busy transfer window under new manager Xabi Alonso.

The Blues have strengthened several areas of the squad with the arrivals of Danny Welbeck, Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra and Valentin Barco, while Jordan Henderson is also expected to complete a move to Stamford Bridge.

Young talents Geovany Quenda, Denner, Dastan Satpaev and Emmanuel Emegha have also joined the club as Chelsea continue to reshape the squad ahead of the new season.

Selling Chalobah would also represent a financial boost for Chelsea under the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, as the academy graduate’s transfer fee would count as pure profit in the club’s accounts.

If the remaining paperwork is completed as expected, Chalobah will become one of Como’s highest-profile signings as the Italian side continues to strengthen its squad for the new campaign.
