Violet Grohl releases her highly anticipated debut album, Be Sweet To Me, today via Auroura Records / Republic Records. It was recorded at producer Justin Raisen’s (Kim Gordon, Charli xcx) Los Angeles home studio alongside musicians assembled in the spirit of the Wrecking Crew session players in the ’60s and ’70s, and its sound takes perpetual influence from the alternative sounds of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s: Pixies, Soundgarden, Cocteau Twins, The Breeders, PJ Harvey, The Muffs, Björk, Alice in Chains, L7, Juliana Hatfield.

“I’ve listened to that stuff since I was a kid,” Grohl says of the blend of sounds evidenced on the album’s singles “THUM,” “595” and “Cool Buzz.” Also out today is a Nikki Milan Houston-directed music video for album track Bug in the Cake,” which can be seen below. Grohl will make her television debut on June 3 on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

“Everything was written in the studio,” Grohl says of the Be Sweet To Me material. “I would come in with an inspiration playlist, we would hang and listen for a little while, and then start writing.” “Violet is so well-versed in all styles of music; every playlist was different,” says Raisen, describing Violet’s assemblages of trip hop, new wave, Scandinavian black metal, ’70s acoustic folk, and vocal jazz. “She showed me a number of things that I wasn’t familiar with; her encyclopedic knowledge of music is crazy.”

Critics are already raving about Be Sweet To Me, with NYLON stating, “Violet Grohl is the most authentic successor we’ve had to ‘90s alt rock in a long time, and if you’re skeptical of that claim, just let the music speak for itself.” SPIN wrote, “The songs from Be Sweet To Me aren’t tentative. They arrive loud, fuzzy and dangerously catchy.”

Violet’s first-ever headline tour kicks off tonight with a sold-out show in Los Angeles and continues this month with sold out shows in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. If you’re in New York, Violet will be playing an in-store at Rough Trade NYC on June 1st. Tickets are available now.
