A Nigerian woman has shared her experience with Omugwo, revealing why she stopped her mother from coming to stay with her after she gave birth to her second child.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), the woman, who said she has four children, described Omugwo as over-hyped, explaining that she still had to handle several household chores despite recently returning from the hospital.

“You see this thing called Omugwo, it’s over-hyped. Somebody like me, I stopped my mom from coming to my house when I gave birth to my second child. I have four kids. You know, there was something she said, and immediately, I change am for am,” she said.

She explained that while her mother was staying with her, she was still expected to cook, clean, bathe herself and handle other responsibilities, while her mother mainly helped with the baby.

According to her, the situation reached a breaking point one morning when there was no food at home and she deliberately acted not strong enough to prepare breakfast.

“There was no food at home, and I wasn’t even ready to cook anything that morning. So I was expecting my mom to be like, ‘Okay, what do you people have, so that I can help you do the breakfast or something?’

You know the next question she asked me? She said, ‘Is she the one that is going to prepare what me and my husband will eat?’” she added.

She said the question broke her emotionally, prompting her to end the Omugwo arrangement after just two weeks by giving her mother transport money to return home.

Her experience has prompted discussions about the realities of Omugwo and the kind of support new mothers expect from family members during the postpartum period.
