Oliver Glasner suffered defeat in his first Premier League game as Nottingham Forest manager after Anton Stach’s late free-kick handed Leeds United a 1-0 victory at the City Ground.

The Austrian was appointed Forest’s fifth manager in less than a year after replacing Vitor Pereira, who was dismissed despite helping the club avoid relegation last season.

    Stach delivers late blow

Forest and Leeds struggled to create clear-cut chances in a closely fought contest, with set-pieces providing the main source of danger for both sides.

Leeds thought they had taken the lead before half-time when Harry Wilson finished Jayden Bogle’s low cross, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Forest came closest to breaking the deadlock shortly afterwards when defender Jair Cunha headed against the post following a scramble inside the Leeds penalty area.

Igor Jesus then went close after the restart, heading Ola Aina’s cross wide, while Leeds goalkeeper Matz Sels was forced into action for the first time when Tarik Muharemovic directed a powerful header towards goal in the 70th minute.

Just when the game appeared destined to finish without a goal, Leeds found the breakthrough in the 88th minute.

Stach won a free-kick after being challenged by Forest defender Nikola Milenkovic and stepped up to take responsibility himself.

The Leeds midfielder struck the set-piece towards the near post, beating Sels to give the visitors a dramatic victory.

The result gives Leeds three points from their first match back in the Premier League, while Glasner must wait longer for his first league win with Forest.

The two teams will meet again at the City Ground on Tuesday, 25 August, when they face each other in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
