Does starring on a hit television show as a child mean you’re financially set for life? A former star of The Bernie Mac Show explains why that’s not how Hollywood works. In this 8 At The Table conversation, the panel reacts to the controversy surrounding a former child actress from The Bernie Mac Show turning to an adult subscription platform years after appearing on the hit television series. One of the biggest assumptions people make is that someone who starred on a successful TV show must still be receiving huge residual checks decades later. But she explains that she was a child when she worked on the show, and while residual payments may continue, those checks can become smaller over time and aren’t necessarily enough to support someone for the rest of their life. Unlike stars who earned enormous salaries per episode on shows like Friends, a child actor’s earnings and residuals can look very different. That raises a much bigger conversation about child stars, Hollywood money, residual checks, financial security and what happens when the fame and acting opportunities slow down. Should former child stars be judged for how they make money as adults? Do viewers overestimate how much actors continue earning from old television shows? And does being famous at 12 create unrealistic expectations about how someone should be living 20 years later? If you were famous as a child but the acting opportunities and money slowed down, what would you do next? Subscribe to 8 At The Table for unfiltered conversations about money, culture, relationships, entertainment and the stories everybody is debating.
