Why do some men get frustrated when a woman tells them about a problem—but doesn’t actually want them to solve it? In this 8 At The Table conversation, the discussion about men, purpose and relationships leads to a provocative idea: “A complaint is a problem you won’t let me solve.” The argument is that many men instinctively respond to the problems of someone they care about by trying to find a solution. Helping, fixing and solving can make a man feel useful and give him a sense of purpose within the relationship. But women at the table push back. Sometimes a woman isn’t asking her partner for a solution. She simply wants to talk about what happened, process her emotions and feel heard. That’s where one of the oldest communication conflicts between men and women begins. She says: “I need to talk.” He hears: “There’s a problem that needs fixing.” She wants him to listen. He starts giving solutions. Then she becomes frustrated because she doesn’t feel heard—and he becomes frustrated because she keeps discussing a problem while rejecting his attempts to fix it. So who’s actually communicating incorrectly? The conversation gets into male purpose, men’s psychology, women venting to men, communication in relationships, problem solving, emotional support, masculinity, femininity and why men and women can respond so differently to the same problem. Women: When you’re venting to your man, do you want solutions—or do you just want him to listen? Men: Does it frustrate you when your partner repeatedly talks about a problem but doesn’t want you to fix it?
