Afrobeat singer Made Kuti has shared his views on marriage proposals and why he chose not to kneel while proposing to his wife, Inedoye Onyenso.

Speaking during a recent episode of the Timeless Podcast on Nix Network’s YouTube channel, the Grammy-nominated artiste explained that he believes marriage should be a mutual agreement between two people rather than an act where one person appears to be begging.

“I did not go down on my knees when proposing to my wife because I told her it was a mutual decision. We are not begging each other to be with each other,” he stated.

The 30-year-old singer also revealed that his wife, Inedoye, was formerly his “school daughter.”

Made Kuti has previously spoken against ethnic bias in relationships. In 2025, he defended his marriage to Inedoye, who is Igbo, after some critics accused the couple of “mixing blood” because of their different ethnic backgrounds.

He described ethnic discrimination as a “slave mentality.”
