Following a recent cabinet change, President Bola Tinubu named Muttaqha Darma as Minister-designate for the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

Muttaqha Darma appointment, which is subject to Senate approval, is part of the administration’s broader efforts to reorient critical economic sectors such as housing and infrastructure.

Darma, a mechanical engineer, graduated from Bayero University Kano and is highly regarded as a technocrat with both academic and public sector expertise.

Before his nomination, he created a career in education, governance, and development administration, including engineering lectures and policy implementation in a variety of industries.

Muttaqha Rabe Darma public service experience began in Katsina State, where he worked under former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in a variety of areas, including work, housing, rural development, transportation, and women’s affairs.

At the federal level, Darma was Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Technology Building Fund, where he managed scholarship programs, capacity building, and institutional strengthening activities in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

Analysts believe Muttaqha Rabe appointment is consistent with his background in infrastructure and development planning, especially given the government’s drive to increase housing delivery and alleviate Nigeria’s housing shortfall.

In addition to his administrative experience, Darma has maintained an active political presence, with ties to northern political groups and previous election activity.

He was previously affiliated with the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Katsina State, but later joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he showed interest in running for the Katsina Central Senatorial seat in 2027.

According to observers, his appointment signifies a potential move toward technocratic leadership in the housing ministry, with an emphasis on boosting policy execution, upgrading housing finance systems, and tackling land administration issues.

His ascent coincides with a critical era in Nigeria’s housing sector, when demand continues to outpace supply, particularly in urban areas.

As the Senate prepares to screen ministerial nominations, Darma’s promises to build on existing reforms and provide quantifiable results in housing development around the country will be closely watched.
