Welcome to Charm City: Exploring Lexington Market with Kalen Allen

As someone who wasn't born in Baltimore, one of my favorite parts of living here has been discovering the city through its food.

I have learned that Baltimore's culinary scene is built on community, culture, and the people behind each business. There are few places that capture that spirit better than Lexington Market.

So when it came time to welcome creator and actor Kalen Allen to Baltimore, I knew exactly where to take him.

With the help of Simone Phillips, creator of Charm City Table, we spent the afternoon exploring some of Lexington Market's standout merchants, each offering a unique taste of Baltimore.

Our first stop was Super Fried Chicken, where Kalen experienced a Baltimore classic: a chicken box with western fries. Since he's in town starring in Baltimore Center Stage's production of Bucking, it felt like the perfect way to introduce him to one of the city's most iconic meals.

Next, we visited Sunnyside Café, where Chef Chris prepared several signature dishes, including hot honey fried catfish and grits, French toast, and the restaurant's popular crab-stuffed croissant. Each dish reflected the creativity and hospitality that make Baltimore's food scene so memorable.

We also stopped by Crunch Kulture to try the Chesapeake Salad, a fresh and flavorful dish that celebrates local ingredients.

No visit to Lexington Market would be complete without dessert. We wrapped up the afternoon with sweet treats from Taharka Brothers and Deedle's Donuts, two Baltimore favorites that provided the perfect ending to our food tour.

As a transplant, I understand what it's like to experience Baltimore for the first time. Over the years, I've learned that the city's story is best told through its neighborhoods, its small businesses, and the people who proudly share their craft with every customer.

Lexington Market is more than a place to grab a meal. It is where Baltimore's history, culture, and community come together under one roof. It has become one of my favorite places to bring visitors because every stop offers another opportunity to experience the heart of Charm City.

Welcome to Baltimore, Kalen. I hope this was just the first of many unforgettable meals in Charm City.

If you'd like to see more of Kalen during his time in Baltimore, be sure to catch him in Bocking at Baltimore Center Stage, running August 14 through September 6. Purchase tickets online at www.centerstage.org/events/bocking/
