When you’ve been navigating this media landscape for as long as I have, you come to appreciate the pioneers who laid the groundwork—the ones who brought the pulse of the blacktop, the cadence of hip-hop, and unapologetic authenticity into mainstream sports journalism.

For me, Robert “Scoop” Jackson wasn’t just a writer I studied coming up; he became a mentor, a brother, and a peer in this game.

Our history goes back years. If you know basketball, print media, and culture, you know the weight his name carries. From his legendary era at SLAM Magazine—where he fought to put a young Allen Iverson on the cover when the mainstream was still sleeping—to his conceptual impact at XXL, and his transformative run as a national columnist at ESPN, Scoop didn’t just cover the culture.

    He built the blueprint.

Whenever we get together, it’s always deeper than just talking about sports. Seeing a Black journalist move with that level of swagger, intellect, and sovereign authority early on showed me how to navigate this space without ever diluting the message. Having known each other for as long as we have, every conversation we share is rooted in years of mutual respect and shared legacy.

The Pull Up With Scoop B | Episode 3 Drops July 30th

On Thursday, July 30, we’re bringing that long-standing history to the screen.

In Episode 3 of The Pull Up With Scoop B, Scoop and I chop it up for a raw, unfiltered masterclass on media evolution, sovereign storytelling, and what it really takes to sustain your voice over decades in this industry.

    Check Out The Trailer Here.

Here’s a snapshot of what went down when we locked in:

Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson: SLAM Magazine is when I remember paying attention to your imprint. In today’s day and age, everybody’s independent, everybody’s unemployed, everybody’s got a brand. Do you kind of feel like you were ahead of your time?

Scoop Jackson: I can reflect back and look at it and see what was being done and say, ‘Yeah, maybe, you know, we were ahead of the curve on some things.’ We were so busy trying to establish something different that we didn’t look at what we were doing as being ahead of the curve. We were in the moment trying to be different and trying to just… not even be relevant, but—I don’t want to minimize the word, but you’d understand this—just trying to be dope.

The Engine Behind the Vision: The Production Crew

To execute a project of this magnitude, it takes a dedicated crew operating seamlessly behind the lenses, lights, and edit suites.

High-level broadcast quality doesn’t happen by accident—it takes a powerhouse team to bring The Pull Up to life every single week:

    • Executive Production & Logistics: Produced by Briahna Gatlin (Swank Publishing) alongside Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson.
    • Direction & Creative Leadership: Directed by Lonnie Edwards.
    • Cinematography & Visual Design: Production expertise spearheaded by CastleLight Productions (Ryan Cassell) and Charlie Murphy, with camera operations and production support from Josh Hicks, Fatima Johnson and Bragard Kizenga.

This team works relentlessly behind the scenes to protect the aesthetic, elevate the storytelling, and ensure that independent media is delivered with top-tier network quality.

    Why This Episode Hits Different

This isn’t an interview—it’s a real-talk exchange between two people who have been in the trenches of independent and mainstream media for years. We break down the shift from the print era to digital independence, the sweat equity behind real journalism, and why protecting your brand and catalog matters now more than ever.

Set your reminders and lock in.
