Mohamed Salah opened his Trabzonspor account in style, scoring twice as the Turkish side secured a 2-1 win over Istanbul Basaksehir in the Super Lig.

The Egypt international made his first league start for Trabzonspor after joining the club on a free transfer from Liverpool during the summer.

Salah breaks drought on home debut

Salah had featured twice before Saturday’s fixture but was still waiting for his first goal since completing his move to Turkey.

The 34-year-old finally broke the deadlock after capitalising on a mistake by Basaksehir goalkeeper Muhammed Sengezer. Salah dispossessed the goalkeeper before his effort took a deflection and went in off the post.

Basaksehir responded through Eldor Shomurodov, who converted from the penalty spot to bring the visitors level.

However, Salah restored Trabzonspor’s advantage after producing a composed finish from 10 yards. The forward met the opportunity first time to put his side back in front.

Salah denied hat-trick by offside call

The former Liverpool forward remained a threat in the closing stages as Trabzonspor protected their lead.

Salah was booked with 11 minutes remaining after the referee judged that he had gone to ground in the penalty area looking for a foul.

He then appeared to complete his hat-trick in stoppage time after finding the empty net from around 45 yards.

The effort would have been one of the highlights of the game, but Salah was ruled offside and the goal was disallowed.

The brace marked a strong start to Salah’s new chapter in Turkey after nine seasons at Liverpool, where he scored 257 goals before leaving as a free agent this summer.

Salah had been widely expected to continue his career in Saudi Arabia but instead opted for Trabzonspor, signing a two-year contract reportedly worth £280,000 per week.

The victory gives the Egyptian forward an immediate platform to establish himself as one of the leading figures in the Turkish top flight.
