A Nigerian lady has shared how her family allegedly failed to bring home the daughter of her late cousin after the child’s maternal relatives reportedly demanded ₦50 million as compensation.

In a post shared on social media, the lady explained that her cousin died last year at the age of 39 without getting married.

    Lady shares late cousin’s story

According to the lady, although her cousin never married, he had a daughter about 17 years ago after getting a woman pregnant.

She claimed he never accepted responsibility for the child or contributed to her upbringing.

    She said:

“My cousin passed away last year at the age of 39. He never got married, but about 17 years ago, he got a lady pregnant and they had a baby girl together.

“Sadly, he never took responsibility for the child or contributed to her upbringing.”

Family reportedly asked to accept child

The lady said that after her cousin’s burial, the girl’s mother contacted the family, asking them to officially accept the teenager as part of her late father’s family.

She explained that because her late cousin’s father had also died, her own father represented the family, accompanied by elders carrying the customary drinks and kola nuts.

Maternal family allegedly demands ₦50 million

She revealed that the visit took an unexpected turn when the girl’s uncles allegedly demanded ₦50 million before they would allow the family to take the girl.

    She stated:

“When they got there, the girl’s uncles demanded ₦50 million before handing her over. They even said if she had been a boy, they would have asked for ₦100 million.

“My dad asked why such an amount.

“Their response? ‘It’s compensation for 17 years of raising her alone while your cousin abandoned his responsibilities.’”

    My dad calmly offered ₦500,000.

    They rejected it.

“Long story short… my papa and his Umunna carried their drinks and kola nuts back home.”
