Philip Payton helped transform Harlem into the center of Black America, building a million-dollar real estate empire before lawsuits, debt, and the Panic of 1907 brought his company crashing down. This documentary tells the remarkable story of Philip A. Payton Jr., the Black real estate entrepreneur often called the father of Harlem. Starting as a porter in New York City, Payton recognized an opportunity that other real estate operators ignored: Black families desperately needed housing, while Harlem landlords were struggling with vacant apartments. Payton turned racial discrimination into a business opportunity, eventually creating the Afro-American Realty Company and helping Black families move into Harlem block by block. At its peak, the company reported more than $1 million in assets, making it one of the most extraordinary Black-owned real estate enterprises of its era. But rapid expansion, heavy borrowing, shareholder accusations, a major lawsuit, and the financial crisis of 1907 pushed the company toward collapse. Despite losing his first empire, Payton rebuilt his real estate business and continued shaping Harlem until his death in 1917, just one month after completing the biggest transaction of his career. Discover how Philip Payton built Black wealth through real estate, challenged housing segregation in New York City, helped create the conditions for the Harlem Renaissance, and built an empire that history nearly forgot. #PhilipPayton #HarlemHistory #BlackBusiness #BlackWealth #BlackHistory #TheBlackWealthExplainer
