Southern University is set to renew a rare in-state matchup with LSU — one that carries both financial significance and historical weight.

The Jaguars will travel to Tiger Stadium on September 9, 2028, according to a copy of the contract. Southern will receive a $750,000 guarantee for the game, a typical payout for matchups between FCS programs and SEC opponents.

The 2028 contest will mark just the second meeting between the two Louisiana programs. Their first matchup came in 2022, when LSU defeated Southern 65-17 in a game that was as culturally significant as it was competitive.

That meeting drew widespread attention across the state, highlighting the deep ties between LSU and the Southern University community — from shared alumni roots in Louisiana to the proximity of Baton Rouge campuses just miles apart.

Historically, LSU has rarely scheduled HBCU opponents, making the 2022 game a notable moment in the evolving landscape of college football scheduling. LSU also played Grambling State — another HBCU — in 2023.

For Southern, the opportunity to face an SEC opponent — especially one in its own backyard — represents both a challenge and a platform to showcase the tradition and pride of SWAC football.
