South Africa is rolling out over 33,000 CCTV cameras, drones, and helicopters, and deploying 13,000 law enforcement officers across Gauteng Province ahead of Tuesday’s anti-migrant protests. The operation, which will cost an estimated R600 million ($35.5 million) will be the largest domestic security operation in recent years, according to Business Insider Africa.

    The anti-migrant protests

The operation comes after concerns from migrant communities who are seeking refuge at embassies and advice in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Some migrants have left their homes and businesses ahead of demonstrations organised by the anti-illegal-immigration movement, March and March, as reported by TechCabal.

The BBC have reported that South African police say 25,000 have returned to their country of origin.

Police using technology to identify criminals

During a media briefing in Eldorado Park, Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni said authorities had established potential hotspots and will use integrated surveillance systems to monitor events in real time.

“We have made arrangements to deploy CCTV cameras, helicopters and drones,” he said.

“Indeed, we have mobilised extensively, and we will have what is called a downlink so that we can observe activities as they happen in real time,” Mthombeni said. Those looking to break the law would be identified through the extensive surveillance network.

Chad Thomas, director at IRS Forensic Investigations, said this deployment highlights technological progress for South African policing.  “Most other countries are already making use of these technologies, whereas in South Africa everything tends to be labour-intensive.”
