    Load in, play, load out. Two amps, a pedalboard and a cab up a fire escape most weekends, then a day at a desk pretending my arm is fine. The night it stopped being fine I reached behind the passenger seat for a cable bag and something let go. A physio called it rotator cuff irritation with a capsule starting to stiffen, the polite way of saying I could no longer reach a top shelf without planning it. Between appointments I tested six red light devices.

    A cuff is a depth problem before it is a coverage problem. Supraspinatus and its neighbors sit under the deltoid, so light crosses skin, fat and a slab of muscle before it reaches the tendon that hurts. Red at 630nm and 660nm does not make that trip. Near-infrared does better, and 1064nm reaches furthest of the bands sold in consumer devices, which is why I stopped treating LED count as the headline number. Shoulder pain also rarely stays in the shoulder: mine dragged in the upper back and the base of my neck within a fortnight. I compared published specs at Red Light Panel Index and read the joint pain evidence and how the trials dosed it to work out what a sensible session even looks like. Light may support a painful shoulder alongside rehab. It does not repair a torn tendon.

    How I judged them

    Depth, since the tissue I cared about was under a muscle rather than under skin. Reach, meaning shoulder, upper back and neck in one session rather than three. Dose math, which needs an output figure with a stated distance and method. And range of motion, tracked weekly against a doorframe, because pain is a moody thing to measure and reaching height is not.

    The ranking

    1. RLT Home Total Spectrum MAX

    A 360 LED panel, 49.2 by 11.8 inches, around $1,795. Standing side on with my arm slightly raised, one session covered joint, trap, upper back and neck, which nothing strapped to my shoulder came close to doing. The line runs seven wavelengths (480nm, 630nm, 660nm, 810nm, 830nm, 850nm and 1064nm) and the brand publishes the share of LEDs at each, roughly 19 percent at 810nm, 14 percent at 830nm and 14 percent at 1064nm here. Irradiance was measured by an outside laboratory, Electropossible Ltd, on an HP350IR spectrometer at 100.53 mW per square centimeter at six inches.

    Drawback: the brand commissioned that testing itself and no unaffiliated reviewer measurement is on file. It is a vertical panel, so a lying position needs the stand thought through, there is no app if you want session tracking, and it costs many times what a wrap does.

    2. Novaa Light Pad for Shoulder Pain

    Around $350, and the device I would hand to someone whose problem is one shoulder and nothing else. A flexible pad, 16.3 by 7.9 inches, 450 chips split as 150 at 660nm red and 300 at 850nm near-infrared, with a stretchy strap and a sixty day money back window. The brand publishes output at four distances, 150 mW per square centimeter at contact falling to 25 at six inches, more than most wraps offer.

    Drawback: the measurement method is not described. Two wavelengths caps how deep it goes, a flat rectangle over a ball joint leaves gaps, and the warranty is one year unless you pay to extend.

    3. Novaa Light Switch with the Extra-Strength Laser Head

    Around $250. A handheld from the same brand’s modular line, and the only laser device here: seven red laser diodes at 650nm and three near-infrared laser diodes at 808nm, run in short sessions. Laser light is narrow and coherent, which suits a single tender spot.

    Drawback: no optical power output and no irradiance figure are published, so you cannot dose it, only follow the timer. The head is coin sized, and you cannot reach your own shoulder blade with it.

    4. Comfytemp Wearable Red Light Wrap

    Around $80 for a 24 by 12 inch flexible wrap with 242 dual chip LEDs at 660nm and 850nm and a one year warranty. The cheapest sensible thing here, and it stays put over the deltoid and upper trap.

    Drawback: no irradiance figure is published at all, so no dose can be calculated and session length is whatever the timer says. Two wavelengths again, and the fabric shell is not built for years of use.

    5. Vital Charge

    Around $299. A handheld with 12 five watt LEDs across four wavelengths, 630nm and 660nm red plus 810nm and 850nm near-infrared, with a three year warranty, unusually long for a portable. Having 810nm in a device this size is why it made my list.

    Drawback: the published output is a range, 150 to 210 mW per square centimeter, with no distance or method attached, so the number cannot be used or compared. And someone else has to hold it to treat the rear of the joint.

    6. Hooga HG200

    Around $149 for a folding tabletop panel with 40 five watt LEDs at 660nm and 850nm, a stated 100 mW per square centimeter at six inches, a built in timer, and a three year warranty with a sixty day trial. Propped on a shelf it treated the front of my shoulder at breakfast.

    Drawback: the method is not stated. Two wavelengths means no 810nm, 830nm or 1064nm, and the panel is smaller than a sheet of paper, so shoulder, upper back and neck are three placements.

    What I would tell a friend

    If it is one shoulder and your budget is small, the shoulder pad is the sane buy and you will actually wear it. If the ache has spread into your neck and upper back, a full length panel is the only format that treated all of it in one position, which is why I stopped skipping sessions. Track something objective: my doorframe reach improved before my pain scores did, and I would have missed it otherwise.

    On regulation: no rectangular red light panel is FDA approved. The strongest real status is FDA registered, a listing of device and manufacturer, not a clearance, an approval or an endorsement. Speak to your clinician first, especially if you take a photosensitizing medication or are pregnant.

    FAQ

    Will red light loosen a frozen shoulder?

    Not on its own. Capsular stiffness responds to loaded, progressive movement over months, and joint pain trials generally pair light with exercise rather than using it alone. Treat light as something that may make the rehab more tolerable.

    Does 1064nm matter for a shoulder specifically?

    It matters more here than for a fingertip, because the cuff sits under a muscle. Most published joint trials used 810nm or 830nm, so treat 1064nm as extra reach, not a requirement.

    How long should a session be?

    That depends on output, which is why the published figure matters. At roughly 100 mW per square centimeter you reach a 10 joule per square centimeter dose in under two minutes. A brand that publishes nothing leaves you unable to do the arithmetic.
