In a relationship, should everything be clearly discussed—or are there certain boundaries your partner should already know not to cross? In this throwback clip from 8 At The Table, Rico Hundo explains why he needs structure, rules and clear expectations in his relationships, even after a woman told him being with him sometimes felt like being “in school.” Rico argues that structure prevents confusion. If coming home at 4 a.m. is unacceptable, say it. If something crosses a boundary, establish that boundary before someone violates it. His problem is when couples never discuss their expectations, one person does something the other doesn’t like, and suddenly the relationship turns into arguments, retaliation and tit-for-tat behavior over rules nobody knew existed. But when does structure become control? Should grown adults need rules about when they come home, what behavior is acceptable and how they operate inside a relationship? Or are clear boundaries, expectations and accountability exactly what keeps a relationship healthy? The conversation opens up a bigger debate about relationship boundaries, communication, leadership, freedom, trust, accountability and unspoken expectations between men and women. Because many relationship problems don’t begin when someone intentionally breaks a rule—they begin when two people discover they were operating under completely different rules in the first place. Watch the full conversation and tell us: Does a healthy relationship need clearly defined rules, or should your partner already know what’s disrespectful without being told? And at what point does structure become control?
