Ronald Nored, a Butler University graduate who helped lead the Bulldogs to back-to-back NCAA championship game appearances as a point guard, has been hired as the head coach of the men’s basketball program at his alma mater.

Butler Vice President and Director of Athletics Grant Leiendecker announced Nored’s hiring on March 25.

“The term ‘dream job’ doesn’t do justice to how I feel about the opportunity to lead the Butler program,” Nored said. “Butler is an incredibly special place. As a player, I poured blood, sweat and tears into this program. No one appreciates both the responsibility and the potential that comes with this position more than me. Passionate fans, Hinkle Fieldhouse, the Big East, storied tradition, a world-class education, a thriving city… there is incredible momentum at Butler right now and I can’t wait to hit the ground running as we elevate Butler to new heights.”

Nored, a 2012 Butler graduate, was the starting point guard for coach Brad Stevens during the Bulldogs’ historic runs to the 2010 and 2011 national championship games. He concluded his playing career with Academic All-America honors in 2012 and remains Butler’s career leader in games played (143), postseason games played (16) and steals (207). His 497 career assists rank third in program history.

“In a rapidly evolving college basketball landscape, our priority was identifying the absolute best leader to spearhead the future of Butler Basketball. Ronald Nored is that leader,” Leiendecker said. “Ron is a relentless worker with an elite basketball IQ and a proven track record of developing talent at the highest level of basketball. He is the ultimate competitor, and he will cultivate that same quality within his team and staff. He is a gifted relationship builder who commands respect through his character and his craft. While he understands the soul of this university, we didn’t hire him for his history here — we hired him for his vision of what we can become and how we will get there.”

Nored’s NBA coaching career began in 2013 when Stevens brought him to the Boston Celtics organization. He has since served on coaching staff with multiple NBA franchises, most recently as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Hawks under coach Quin Snyder. He also spent two seasons (2021-23) on Rick Carlisle’s staff with the Indiana Pacers.

His experience includes head-coaching roles with the Brooklyn Nets’ G League affiliate, the Long Island Nets (2016-18), and at Brownsburg High School (2012-13), immediately following his graduation from Butler.

“We are excited to welcome Ron, Danielle and their family back to Butler,” said Butler President James M. Danko. “Ron is a shining example of a Bulldog who was built at Butler while also positively impacting others and the university during his time as an undergrad. His talent and work ethic have allowed him to be successful on the greatest basketball stage in the world, working alongside the best athletes and coaches in the sport. I can’t wait to see the impact that Ron can have on his alma mater and our basketball program in this leadership role.”

Nored graduated from Butler in 2012 with a degree in Early/Middle Childhood Education. He and his wife, Danielle, have four children: Avery, Kai, Jude and Campbell.
