A young lady has expressed frustration after rainwater reportedly entered her room through a leaking ceiling and soaked her bed following a heavy rainfall on Tuesday night.

    Overnight rainfall damages property

The incident, which occurred in her rented apartment, forced her to move her mattress and bedding outside to dry under the sun the next morning.

According to the resident, the unexpected leakage started during the downpour and continued throughout the night, leaving parts of her room flooded and several personal belongings wet.

Neighbours in the area also reportedly complained about poor roofing and drainage problems caused by the seasonal rains currently affecting many communities across the country.

The lady, while speaking about the incident, said she had no option but to dry her bed outdoors after discovering the damage in the morning.

“I just noticed my ceiling is leaking. The rain that fell yesterday entered my room and wet my bed. I had no choice than to dry it outside,” she said.

Residents call for better building maintenance

Residents blamed the problem on poor maintenance by property owners, adding that similar incidents have occurred during previous rainy seasons.

In 2024, several tenants in different parts of Lagos and other Nigerian cities also reported cases of leaking roofs, flooded apartments and damaged household items after prolonged rainfall and weak drainage systems overwhelmed residential buildings.

Some residents have called on landlords and property managers to repair damaged roofs and improve drainage facilities to prevent further destruction as the rainy season intensifies across the country.
