We need to talk about the quiet price hike nobody warned us about.

Because when did basic become £120?

A silk press in London can now set you back £100 to £120, depending on length and treatment. And that’s before you add Olaplex, trims, or anything that makes it actually last. Even at the lower end, you’re still looking at £70 to £90 for something considered “standard.”

Braids? The “from £70” listings don’t tell the full story. Add length, size, extensions, time, and suddenly you’re at £120 minimum, with longer styles pushing closer to £200.

Let’s be honest. This isn’t occasional glam. This is maintenance.

This is what it costs to show up polished at work. To feel like yourself. To exist without being labelled “unkempt.”

And yet we’re expected to absorb it quietly, like it’s just part of being us.

Meanwhile, the cost-of-living conversation rarely includes this reality. Nobody is factoring in the cultural tax of Black beauty. The time. The money. The fact that our “basics” are priced like luxuries.

So the question isn’t just “why is it so expensive?”

    It’s deeper than that.

Why is looking like ourselves still something we have to budget for like a treat.
