Social media exploded over Tuskegee University’s new dress-code rules, but Roland Martin says the outrage is missing the bigger point. The policy is about standards, preparation and Black excellence, not anti-Black policing. Brown outlined updated student expectations covering attire, attendance and classroom cellphone use. Critics focused heavily on the policy’s restrictions on bonnets, durags and bedroom slippers in class and the cafeteria, with some calling the move anti-Black or an example of respectability politics. Roland Martin pushes back hard on that framing. He says the policy does not ban those items from campus altogether and should be understood as part of a larger set of expectations tied to academic seriousness and professional preparation. He also points out that many of the loudest reactions ignored the university’s expanded focus on internships, certifications, résumé building, Career Center visits and classroom attendance. Randi Bryant, a Tuskegee graduate, says the university’s job is to prepare students for the workplace and for the larger society they will have to navigate after graduation. Dr. Mustafa Santiago Ali and Wen-kuni Céant argue that showing up with rigor, discipline and pride is part of Black excellence, not a betrayal of it. They say social media outrage often strips away context, exaggerates narrow points and misses the larger goal of helping Black students succeed. The segment becomes a broader debate over standards, pride, preparation and whether HBCUs should be able to set clear expectations without immediately being accused of anti-Blackness. Roland’s view is blunt: if students or critics do not like the standards, they are free to choose another institution. #RolandMartinUnfiltered #BlackStarNetwork #TuskegeeUniversity #HBCU #BlackExcellence #DressCode #CollegeLife #HigherEducation Black Star Network Partner: Chapter Chapter and its affiliates are not connected with or endorsed by any government entity or the federal Medicare program.
