Oprah Winfrey, the “Queen of Daytime Television,” is expanding her media empire to the Amazon platforms. The deal gives Amazon the rights to Oprah’s podcast, TV show, book club, and the back catalog of The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

From July, Wondery – Amazon’s podcast network – will be distributing The Oprah Podcast across Amazon services. These include Prime Video, Amazon Music, Fire TV Channels, and Audible.

This partnership places one of the most recognizable voices in American media inside Amazon’s rapidly expanding audio and streaming ecosystem. For Winfrey, it marks her move into the platforms now shaping audience attention.

    Oprah’s Legacy

Winfrey has been widely recognized as one of the most influential women in the world. Her TV and media career spans over 50 years. She first appeared on screen at 19. At the time, she became the youngest and first Black female news anchor at Nashville’s WLAC-TV. When she relocated to Chicago, she turned the low-rated “AM Chicago” into the city’s highest-rated talk show within months. As a result of her sustained success, the show was renamed “The Oprah Winfrey Show” in 1986.

In 1988, Winfrey launched her production company, Harpo Productions. This made her the third woman ever to own a studio. With the studio, she produced her own show and several successful spin-offs, including “Dr. Phil,” “Rachael Ray,” and “The Dr. Oz Show.” Winfrey started her renowned Book Club in 1996 and “O – The Oprah Magazine” in 2000. Both had an immense cultural impact.

As a television personality, actor, media executive, writer, and entrepreneur, her work has touched the lives of millions across the globe. Winfrey has been recognized with over 40 Daytime Emmy Awards, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013.

Off-screen, Winfrey has dedicated herself to philanthropic work, spending $400 million on various projects. She is most notably responsible for Oprah’s Angel Network and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.

    The Oprah Podcast

As the media landscape shifted away from traditional television, Winfrey was paying attention. In 2024, she launched “The Oprah Podcast.” It is available to stream on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and other distributors. She continued her legacy of talk-show television in a new medium: podcasts. There she interviews today’s thought leaders, global newsmakers, bestsellers, and cultural visionaries. Guests on “The Oprah Podcast” have included Serena Williams, Hugh Jackman, Kate Hudson, and Mel Robbins. Together, they discuss topics ranging from happiness to resilience in an effort to “help listeners on their journey to lead their best life.”

Now Wondery will be the primary distributor of the podcast, sharing it on all Amazon platforms. The show will remain on YouTube and other podcast distribution sites. However, it will now increase its output to two episodes per week instead of one. Wondery hosts other successful podcasts, including Baby, This Is Keke Palmer” and “Mind the Game,” hosted by LeBron James and JJ Redick, respectively. This further consolidates its position as a platform capable of hosting major players.

“Expanding our reach globally is an opportunity I embrace, as we continue to connect through stories that invite new ways of seeing and, hopefully, deepen understanding,” said Winfrey in a statement.
