Cheyenne Bryant is once again making headlines, and the internet remains deeply divided. The embattled motivational speaker and self-described relationship expert has faced mounting questions about her academic background for weeks, with continued public debate surrounding the doctorate she has referenced throughout her career.

To understand the controversy, we have to go back. Pastor Jamal Bryant invited Cheyenne Bryant onto his podcast, Let’s Be Clear, where several of her comments sparked widespread backlash. In the days that followed, the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church leader publicly distanced himself from the interview—and from Bryant herself.

“It pulls us back further,” Jamal said while issuing a public correction to his audience. “We already had suspicion, we already had a pregnant pause, and we already had an overwhelming trepidation as to whether or not medical mental health was appropriate for us… Only between 2.5 percent and 3 percent of Black people have an earned doctorate degree.”

The news around Cheyenne Bryant has since evolved into something far more complicated.

Last week, she addressed the controversy in her own way, taking part in a viral Instagram trend where users imagine the details of their fictional Netflix documentaries. In the video, she appears wearing graduation regalia while the caption references a hypothetical documentary exploring whether she is “really a doctor.” The post quickly became fuel in the ongoing conversation, with social media users debating the symbolism of the video and the claims surrounding her academic background.

The controversy escalated further when Pastor Bryant said he received a cease-and-desist from Cheyenne Bryant after speaking publicly about the matter. He later shared what he said was an email from Jaquel Pitts, acting president and vice president of Indiana Southwest Christian University—the institution Bryant has identified as the source of her doctorate—defending the degree while declining to release her academic transcripts, citing protections under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

Pitts later appeared on Marc Lamont Hill’s program to address questions about the institution and Cheyenne’s degree. During the interview, Pitts said the university was established in May 2026 and acknowledged awarding her a Doctor of Psychology degree after she had already publicly identified herself as a psychologist. He described the decision as an effort to “validate her self-fulfilled prophecy.”

For many observers, the explanation raised more questions than it answered.

But at this point, the story is no longer simply about transcripts, titles or one disputed degree. It has become a larger cultural conversation about credibility, accountability and the responsibility that comes with positioning oneself as an authority.

So, what do we do with Cheyenne Bryant?

Perhaps the better question is: What do we do when the people we’ve trusted to teach us become the subject of the lesson?

For years, she built a recognizable platform around conversations about relationships, emotional wellness and personal growth. Her videos and interviews frequently went viral, and she often pointed to the success of her sessions, appearances and conversations as evidence that her message was reaching people. For many of her followers, she became a trusted voice.

As questions surrounding the Internet personality have intensified, licensed mental health professionals have pushed back on several of her public statements about therapy, insurance, licensure and clinical practice, raising larger conversations about the distinction between coaching, counseling and licensed psychological care. Others have pointed to moments in which her public interactions—including a heated exchange with journalist Touré—appeared inconsistent with the level of professionalism many expect from someone positioned as a mental health authority.

And yet, public criticism does not always translate into lost influence.

The internet often treats accountability as though it begins and ends with a trending hashtag or the declaration that someone has been “canceled.” But reality is far more complicated. People will continue making their own decisions about whom they trust, whose work they support and whose advice they follow. Some may continue booking speaking engagements with her, purchasing her books or engaging with her content. Others may decide that the questions surrounding her credibility are enough to step away. Both responses can exist at the same time.

That is perhaps the larger lesson of the Cheyenne Bryant controversy. In an era where expertise can be built through a camera, a podcast microphone or a social media following, audiences are increasingly tasked with asking difficult questions: What qualifies someone to guide us? What responsibility does a public figure have to be transparent about their expertise? And what happens when the image someone has built begins to collide with the questions surrounding it?

Cheyenne Bryant’s future will not ultimately be determined by reaction videos, social media debates, or the latest headline. It will depend on whether the people who have trusted her believe she has adequately addressed the concerns surrounding the foundation of her expertise.

Influence can open the door. Credibility is what keeps it open.
