Nigerian Brand Meji Meji's New Collection Is Perfect For Summer Nasikanabasi Effiong for Meji Meji By Mecca Pryor ·Updated May 15, 2026 Getting your Trinity Audio player ready…

Tolu Oye launched Meji Meji at a time of uncertainty in 2020, debuting the brand during the height of the pandemic with an offering of masks and bucket hats. What began as a small accessories venture has since evolved into an it-girl favorite, recognized for its Nollywood-inspired graphics thoughtfully splashed across everything from T-shirts to dresses and tracksuits. Additionally, the brand has even partnered with skincare label Topicals on a viral campaign.

Then came the phone call that shifted everything. “[The accessories] got picked up by Nordstrom the following year in 2021, and that was kind of like a calling for me of like, okay, I know that I’m destined for this,” Oye tells ESSENCE. “Because I was still teetering between the idea of if this is what I wanted to do.”

After doing the inner work, and following a dream that ultimately changed her perspective, Oye committed fully to Meji Meji. She spent a year researching what she wanted the brand to represent while identifying gaps in the market. Six years later, Meji Meji has grown into something far beyond what she initially imagined.

“I didn’t realize the impact that the world had of Meji Meji until literally last week,” she shares. “I think it’s different when you see 500 students coming up to you and saying, ‘Wow, I can see myself in you.’”

Still, Oye has ambitions that stretch far beyond fashion. She envisions Meji Meji expanding into film, literature, and other creative spaces, a vision reflected in the brand’s newest campaign. Launched alongside a Nollywood-inspired short film, the campaign centers around a hero piece: a mesh dress featuring what she calls the “Meji Meji Mama.” The character’s face dominates the front of the dress, surrounded by dotted detailing and vibrant hues.

Oye describes Meji Meji Mama as “the new version of Betty Boop.” In line with her mission tosrc="https://media.essence.com/vxcjywbwpa/uploads/2026/05/NSI00042-1-scaled.jpg" alt="Meji Meji’s New Collection Is Perfect For Summer" width="400" height="500" />

Looking ahead, Oye hopes to build Meji Meji into what she describes as “our version of The Walt Disney Company.” Drawing inspiration from learning how to sew from her mother, growing up in hair salons, and embracing what it means to be a femme fatale, one thing is clear: she’s building a cultural staple—and she’s only getting started.
