    Big Bethel AME Church was called "the Black City Hall" of Atlanta in the late 1800s. Everything Black in this city ran through it. When white trustees from Clark College asked to use the basement for classes, the leaders of Big Bethel asked a better question: "Why can't we just start our own college?" These were former slaves. The pastor, Wesley John Gaines, stood up and said, "With the help of God, we will start our own college." That moment is why Morris Brown is the only college in Georgia founded, funded, owned, and operated by Black people, for Black people.
