Ghost in the Shell, Mamoru Oshii's landmark 1995 cyberpunk anime, is heading back to the big screen for its 30th anniversary in the US. Lionsgate is bringing the film to more than 800 North American theaters on September 18, with a first-ever 4K presentation in select locations. While the film has circulated for three decades across home video and streaming, this run marks the first time it will play in 4K in select theaters, a resolution bump aimed squarely at Oshii's dense, meticulously composed frames. The wide 800-plus screen count makes it one of the more expansive anime catalog re-releases, positioning the anniversary as a theatrical event rather than a limited revival booking.Set in 2029, it follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetic government agent who, alongside her Section 9 colleagues in the Internal Bureau of Investigations, tracks a mysterious and dangerous computer virus called The Puppet Master, an entity capable of infiltrating human hosts. What unfolds is a high-tech race to capture a threat that seems to be everywhere at once, a premise that let Oshii probe questions of identity and consciousness that have kept the film in conversation ever since. Its pedigree runs deep. Oshii directed from a script by Kazunori Itô, adapting the manga by Masamune Shirow, with a voice cast led by Atsuko Tanaka, Akio Ōtsuka, Kōichi Yamadera, and Tamio Ōki. The award-winning production has long been regarded as one of the leading Japanese animated films ever made, and the anniversary reissue frames that reputation for both returning viewers and audiences seeing it in a theater for the first time.Ghost in the Shell returns to more than 800 North American theaters, including select 4K presentations, on September 18.
