FIFA has opened a disciplinary investigation into Argentina following the post-match confrontations that marred the end of the 2026 World Cup final against Spain.

The world football governing body confirmed that its disciplinary committee has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to examine the incidents that occurred after Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat at MetLife Stadium.

The investigation could result in sanctions against individual players, coaching staff or the Argentine Football Association (AFA), depending on the findings.

    Players and officials under scrutiny

The clashes broke out moments after the final whistle as Spain’s players celebrated their World Cup triumph.

Argentina defender Nahuel Molina, midfielders Leandro Paredes and Thiago Almada, as well as assistant coach Roberto Ayala, were among those appearing to be involved in the altercation.

Referee Slavko Vincic initially reported that Paredes had been sent off for an incident involving Spain defender Eric Garcia.

However, FIFA later removed the red card from the official match record and confirmed that no disciplinary action was taken during the game.

Argentina had already been reduced to 10 men after Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card during stoppage time in normal play.

The AFA is also facing a separate disciplinary process after some Argentina players displayed a banner supporting the country’s claim over the Falkland Islands following their semi-final victory against England.

    Possible sanctions

FIFA’s disciplinary code allows for a range of penalties, including suspensions, fines and sanctions against national associations if players or officials are found guilty of misconduct.

The investigation will assess whether the actions breached principles of fair play or brought football into disrepute.

The prosecutor will consider both aggravating and mitigating factors before making recommendations to the disciplinary committee.

Argentina have faced disciplinary issues in previous tournaments. After winning the 2022 World Cup, the AFA was fined over players’ conduct during celebrations, while goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez later received a two-match suspension in 2024 for offensive behaviour during World Cup qualifiers.

FIFA has not provided a timeline for completing the latest investigation.
