Today, Netflix has released the official trailer, key art, and first-look images for the third and final season of Survival of the Thickest, the acclaimed comedy co-created by Michelle Buteau and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel. Inspired by Buteau’s collection of essays, the series has spent the past two seasons following Mavis as she rebuilt her life, pursued her ambitions, and learned to bet on herself.

The final chapter promises more of the humor, friendship, and romantic chaos that made the show a fan favorite. Buteau returns as Mavis Beaumont alongside series regulars Tone Bell and Marouane Zotti. Amy Aniobi serves as showrunner and executive producer for the upcoming season.

“It’s bittersweet,” Buteau told ESSENCE about the show’s upcoming finale. “It feels like a beautiful journey. Three is such a strong number. It’s a trilogy. It’s giving Father, Son, Holy Spirit—I love a nice round number.”

“I feel like we got to tell so many stories within what, like 15 hours of television?” she added. “We went from Peppermint being this beautiful trans woman who is the owner of a drag bar in the neighborhood to being a married woman and living her soft life. We went from Mavis being cheated on, and an assistant, to making her own decisions and being a boss for herself… It feels good. I’m not going to lie. I’m really thankful for the opportunity and I’m going to look back on this and it’s going to make my heart grow even more.”

Since its debut, Survival of the Thickest has stood out for its portrayal of a Black woman navigating life and love on her own terms. Through Mavis, audiences have watched a stylist and aspiring designer turn heartbreak into opportunity while leaning on a close-knit community of friends.

Season three will also feature an impressive lineup of guest stars. Peppermint returns alongside appearances from Garcelle Beauvais, Wanda Sykes, D.L. Hughley, Ashley Graham, Ronny Chieng, Ice-T, Wyatt Cenac, Jenna Lyons, Liza Treyger, Kandi Burruss, LaQuan Smith, Charles Harbison, Ashley Romans, Anthony Michael Lopez, Alecsys Proctor-Turner, Jonathan Higginbotham, Dan Amboyer, and RonReaco Lee.

As the series prepares to conclude, Buteau hopes audiences appreciate what it took to bring Mavis Beaumont’s story to life and the significance of seeing a character like her at the forefront of a hit comedy. “I’d like viewers to know just how much thought and time goes into not just making television, but making this kind of television from a plus size black woman,” she said. “I’m also a comedian, [this show] is based and ripped off of stories and themes from my life, from my book, how rare it is, how special it is, how it’s like lightning in a bottle, how amazing it is, but also how everybody should be achieving their dreams.”

“This is kind of amazing,” she continued. “I hope it inspires them to do the same for themselves. And that this is not the end. It’s not a goodbye. So see you later.”

Produced by A24 and Mosaic, the comedy has earned praise for its sharp writing and Buteau’s charismatic lead performance. Take a look at some exclusive images from Season 3 of Survival of the Thickest below.
