Former Super Eagles forward Michael Eneramo has died after collapsing during a friendly match in Kaduna, the Nigeria Football Federation has confirmed.

The 40-year-old reportedly suffered a suspected cardiac arrest five minutes into the second half before receiving medical attention on the pitch. His death was later confirmed.

    NFF reacts to tragic loss

NFF general secretary Mohammed Sanusi described the incident as “devastating,” paying tribute to Eneramo’s contribution to the national team and the game.

“I can only pray that God will grant him eternal rest and also grant his loved ones and the Nigeria football family the fortitude to bear the loss,” Sanusi said.

Eneramo earned 10 caps for Nigeria and was widely respected for his physical presence, work rate and goal-scoring ability.

One of his most notable contributions came during qualification for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, when he scored in a crucial 2-2 draw against Tunisia that helped Nigeria secure a place at the tournament.

    Career and legacy

At club level, Eneramo enjoyed a successful spell with Espérance Sportive de Tunis, where he became a fan favourite and was nicknamed “Al Dababa” (The Tank) due to his strength and attacking style. He also played professionally in Algeria, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

The Tunisian giants paid tribute, describing him as “a symbol of strength, determination and resolve” who created unforgettable moments during his time at the club.

Eneramo had previously turned down the opportunity to represent Tunisia internationally, opting instead to play for Nigeria, making his debut in 2009.

    Wider concerns in football

His death adds to a growing list of footballers who have suffered fatal cardiac incidents on the pitch, including Marc-Vivien Foe, Cheick Tiote and Raphael Dwamena.

The incidents have intensified calls for stricter medical screening protocols. Former Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba has previously advocated for compulsory health checks for professional players to help detect underlying conditions.

Eneramo’s passing represents a major loss to Nigerian football, with tributes continuing to pour in for a player remembered for both his strength on the pitch and his commitment to the national cause.
