Bastian said strong demand and limited airline capacity could allow carriers to keep much of the pricing power gained when soaring fuel expenses forced fares higher. Delta has reportedly passed about 60% of its increased fuel costs to passengers and expects to recover the full amount during the next quarter. Delta generated approximately $17.7 billion in adjusted revenue during the quarter, but its profit declined as record fuel expenses cut into earnings. Bastian argued that fares are determined by demand and available seats—not simply the price of fuel—meaning cheaper oil does not guarantee cheaper flights.
