Hundreds of thousands of Black women lost jobs in 2025, and a new report says structural racism and discrimination are keeping young Black women out of the labor market. Black women lost jobs at three times the rate of all women in professional and service occupations in 2025, and hundreds of thousands lost work between January and August. Jennifer Turner, senior research associate at the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, joins Roland Martin to discuss the report “Barriers, Not Bootstraps.” Turner says the researchers examined why young Black women are having trouble entering the labor market and came to a direct conclusion: “structural racism and discrimination” are keeping them out. Roland points to federal government cuts, corporate job losses and the anti-DEI backlash as a “double whammy,” especially because Black workers have historically been heavily represented in federal employment. Turner says Black women were disproportionately affected by federal job cuts and warns that jobs that once provided a pathway to the middle class and economic mobility are disappearing. Candace Kelley asks why employers are failing to hire a workforce Turner describes as highly educated and highly skilled. Matt Manning focuses on another troubling finding: Black women are earning degrees, but the return on that education is not the same as it is for their white counterparts. Michael Imhotep raises the reality facing Black women who are trying to pivot into entrepreneurship after losing jobs, while Turner says this is a moment to invest in Black businesses and strengthen the policies that allow them to survive. Turner says the answer is not simply telling Black women to get more education. She calls for stronger civil rights protections, workforce protections and the infrastructure necessary to guarantee equal access to opportunity. #RolandMartinUnfiltered #BlackStarNetwork #BlackWomen #BlackJobs #EmploymentCrisis #StructuralRacism #BlackEconomy Black Star Network Partner: Chapter Chapter and its affiliates are not connected with or endorsed by any government entity or the federal Medicare program.
